Effects of Hypervitaminosis a and D on Skeletal Metabolism.

چکیده
The feeding of escessive amounts of vitamin D to animals causes pathological changes in the skeleton and calcification of soft tissues (l-4). Hypervitaminosis A causes bone fragility. Spontaneous fractures occur in growing rats, whereas in the adult rat only rarefaction develops (5-8). Although excesses of each vitamin cause specific pathological changes, the concomitant feeding of toxic amounts of both vitamins prevents to a large extent soft tissue calcification and the skeletal changes that accompany hypervitaminosis D (g-10). The present investigation was undertaken to determine how vitamin A exerts its beneficial action in offsetting some of the pathological changes observed in hypervitaminosis D. A preliminary account of these studies has been reported (1 I).

Alterations in the Lipids of Bone Caused by Hypervitaminosis a and D.
1. The total lipid, phospholipid, total and free fatty acid, free and esterified cholesterol contents of the long bones of normal, hypervitaminotic A, D and A plus D rats were determined. 2. Toxic amounts of vitamin A decreased the total fatty content, whereas toxic amounts of vitamin D increased triglycerides, esterified cholesterol and in particular the phospholipids of bone. 3. An interactio...
متن کاملA case report of hypervitaminosis D in 2 months old infant
Introduction Vit D level is low in human milk (20-60 IU/Lit) thus dialy supplement of 400 Vit D is advised since birth for all infants. On the other hand upper limit dose for long term Vit D intake is 1000 IU/day for children less than one year of age. Excessive Vit D more than upper limit by physicians or parents can cause hypervitaminoseD. We report a rare case of hypervitaminose D in two mon...
Background and Objective: Chronic use of antiepileptic drugs may influence the bones and their mineral metabolism due to deficiency of vitamin D3. In this study we investigated the effect of high dose vitamin D3 on bones and their mineral metabolism. Materials and Methods: Fifty six children older that 3 years old who were affected by epilepsy and had taken the antiepileptic drugs at least for ...

RECENT REPORTS have indicated that idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia, a disease related to deranged vitamin D metabolism, -4 may be a feature of the nonfamilial, congenital supravalvar aortic stenosis syndrome.5 8 Other manifestations of this syndrome include mental retardation, a peculiar "elfin" facies, narrowing of peripheral pulmonary and systemic arteries, strabismus, inguinal herniae, an...
متن کاملAscorbic acid activity in adrenal glands of rats with hypervitaminosis A.
Toxic effects of administering large doses of vitamin A have been known for a long time to occur in human beings as well as in laboratory animals (Josephs, 1944; Knudson & Rothman, 1953). Polar bear liver is an unusually potent source of vitamin A and is toxic as a food even for Eskimo's dogs (Rodahl & Moore, 1943). I n hypervitaminosis A basal metabolism is lowered (Sadhu & Brody, 1947) and li...
